Gwenllian comes home!

A plaque in memory of Gwenllian has now been fixed on a rock close to the summit of Snowdon!  The calligrapher Ieuan Rees who carved it, with another man helping, fixed the plaque on Thursday morning, 24 July 2008.  The plaque has already sparked off comments and discussion among visitors to the summit.  (See details.)

AGM, Llanberis, 9 June 2007:

The Snowdon plaque was presented to Mr Rob Owen, Policy Director of the Snowdonia Society.

The plaque at the National Eisteddfod:

Hundreds of people came to see the plaque on display on the Society's stand at the National Eisteddfod in August 2007.

Renaming a Mountain:

The National Trust has given us its comments on the idea of renaming Carnedd Uchaf (the Upper Cairn) as Carnedd Gwenllian (see details).  The Trust's Director for Wales, Iwan Huws, said that some people think it is the Trust's responsibility to protect traditional place names against change, while others are concerned that climbers and walkers might get lost in the mountains if familiar names are replaced by new ones.  He does not feel that the Trust can take this idea forward at the moment.

It may be possible to give a name to a peak that has not had a name before, and it may also be possible to place a plaque on top of whichever mountain is chosen, inviting people to call it Carnedd Gwenllian.  The Society continues to seek the views of local people and organisations.
